Panthers Defeat Westfield 4-3!

April 2, 2008

With the varsity win tonight, Oak swept Westfield, but there was definitely a pitching duel going on with winning pitcher Chase Barnett and Westfield’s Jake St. Laurent; both pitchers gave up minimal hits and walks.

Once again Oak’s infield had amazing defense. Scott Arthur and Wes Theiss contributed two more double plays. Austin Jackson fielded several balls at third to throw out batters at first base where Ryan Kizer and Brent McMinn are sharing duties while Ethan Carnes is recovering from surgery.

Offensively, hits were few against some tough Westfield pitching. The Panthers scored in the first inning after Kaleb Goodell singled. Goodell stole second and moved on to third. Garrett Harrison flew out to right field, but earned an RBI when Goodell tagged and scored.

Oak’s second run came in the fourth inning. Travis Walker got on with a HBP. Austin Jackson singled to center field and earned an RBI when Walker scored.

Westfield scored in the fifth inning to make the score 2-1.

In the sixth inning Garrett Harrison hit to third and advanced to third base on a throwing error. Travis Walker walked and then stole second. Austin Jackson came up with another huge hit to left field to earn another RBI scoring Harrison. Walker scored on a Westfield error making the score 4-1.

Westfield responded in the top of the seventh inning scoring two runs, but Wes Theiss shut them down throwing out the tying run at home to catcher CJ Manning. Then a 4-6-3 (Theiss to Arthur to McMinn) double play ended the game.

Hits for the Panthers tonight came from Kaleb Goodell and Austin Jackson with two singles each, and CJ Manning had a single.

Great job Panthers!! Keep it up as we head into round two of district play against Tomball Tuesday night.
