The Klein Oak Sophomores beat Spring's sophomore team 8-1, splitting the season series 1-1. J.P. Phillips pitched a complete game for Klein Oak allowing only 1 run. Only three batters reached the plate for either team in the first with Spring having one base runner that was caught stealing on the throw from Emerson at catcher to Arthur at second.
Spring had a batter reach in the second but was stranded when both Emerson and Arthur caught pop ups and Phillips recorded his second of seven strikeouts to end the inning. The hit for the Panthers in the second was a single by Zach Schulze but he and Thompson were left stranded when the inning ended.
The third started with two quick outs for Spring as Will Hoffmans caught a long fly ball and a great throw by Zach Schulze and awesome stretch by first baseman Jacob Fowler retired the first two batters for Spring. A single by the third Lion put him on base but the inning ended with another great stop by Schulze and a throw to Fowler.
Panthers remained scoreless in the bottom of the 3rd and the Lions produced nothing in the top of the fourth as their first batter flew out to left fielder Matt Sloan, their second was struck out by Phillips and the third was picked after reaching on an error. The score remained 0-0 going into the bottom of the 4th.
Panthers bats to the rescue! The first two Panthers, Emerson and Fowler, walked. Spring tried a pitching change but Thompson doubled scoring Emerson and Schulze got on with a single to load the bases. Sloan's single scored 2 and Will Hoffmans' double scored Thompson. The inning ended with the next two batters but Oak captured 4 runs to lead Spring going into the 5th.
A fly out to Cody Steele in right, a strike out and a 4-3 play between Arthur and Fowler retired the first 3 batters for Spring in the 5th. Fowler doubled at the top of the 5th for the Panthers and singles by Thompson, Schulze and Sloan produced one more run for Oak before the side was retired. Oak went into the 6th inning up 5-0.
In the top of the 6th, the Lions led off the inning with a walk that led to the Lion's only run. Phillips came back with a strike out and then two singles and a hit batsman drove in the run and loaded the bases. Phillips induced a ground ball to third and Thompson and Fowler completed a great 5-3 double play to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Panther bats remained hot. Butler walked to start the inning and a great bunt single by Phillips put the first two Panthers on base. Arthur singled to load the bases. Fowler's sac fly scored Butler and Emerson's double scored Phillips. Thompson's sac fly scored Arthur and the inning produced 3 runs for the Panthers.
The top of the 7th was a quick one as a great 5-3 play between Thompson and Fowler kept Lions of base and two quick strike outs by Phillips ended the game giving Oak the win 8-1.
